Burberry RTW Spring/Summer 2017 London

The following review was written about the brand’s previous Fall 2016 show.

Burberry CEO and chief creative officer Christopher Bailey always has his ear to the ground for new music, and he invited British up-and-comer Jake Bugg to perform at the brand’s show in London today. In keeping with the tone of the men’s presentation in January, there was a distinctly David Bowie vibe to the clothes, and models, male and female, had their faces sprinkled with Ziggy Stardust–style glitter. Bailey described the new collection as a patchwork of his favorite things, and the compilation of ’70s glam-rock motifs, military tailoring, and mixed-media bohemia had a soulful English eclecticism about it. Edie Campbell, a model whose whole being seems to vibrate London-girl cool, opened the show with a look that spoke to that mix—a thigh-skimming jacquard dress, patterned tights, and a regimental navy wool coat with tons of attitude that grazed the edge of rubber-soled patchwork python boots.

A groovy tomboy feeling came through most strongly in the outerwear, and each overcoat had its own quirky twist, like an oversize shearling coat replete with multicolored python piping and a khaki green field jacket with jumbo golden hardware reminiscent of the Queen’s Guard. Those slightly mannish proportions worked nicely with the sweeter, romantic ideas in the collection, such as the sequined minis covered with swirly ’70s wallpaper patterns and the print-on-print maxi dresses. With its dinky ladylike shape, wide utilitarian strap, and shiny, extra-large buckle, the label’s new patchwork handbag seemed to speak to the best of both worlds and had a kooky maximalism that felt right for now.

And on the topic of right now, it’s been a matter of weeks since the label announced it would be making shows direct-to-consumer in September. Burberry has been among the first in the industry to embrace the Internet age with open arms, optimizing its global reach via all the digital channels at its disposal—live-stream, Snapchat, and an important partnership with Apple—and the brand now seems more than equipped to navigate the change. Suki Waterhouse, who sat front row at the show, clearly couldn’t wait to get her hands on the collection and was already wearing a pair of the new studded ankle boots. Generating that level of excitement with shoppers will be the next big step come fall.

Bottega Veneta RTW Spring/Summer 2017 Milan

by SARAH MOWER

Gigi Hadid and Lauren Hutton, two modeling greats of their times, walked arm in arm as Tomas Maier’s symbol of what Bottega Veneta is all about—a classy way of carrying on. Hadid was wearing a sporty, dusty rose pink taffeta top and pants, Hutton a beige trench coat. Maier doesn’t do pomp and ceremony; his spring collection was, even by his rigorous standards, an extreme exercise in restraint—or as he described it afterward, about the aesthetics of “nothing” clothes. Yet this was a grand occasion: the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Bottega Veneta. The connection with Hutton is that she carried an intrecciato woven clutch bag in the 1980 movie American Gigolo. It’s been reproduced as a company milestone re-edition among 14 other bags from the archive.

The value of the living tradition of Italian handwork has been a theme of Milan Fashion Week—with the vocal support of the Italian prime minister. But as wondrous as Bottega Veneta’s unique handwoven technique may be (or anyone’s, for that matter), crafts can only be made exciting and desirable in the light of fashion, and that’s what Maier has successfully brought to the accessory house in his time as creative director. He takes issue, though, with many of the practices of fashion marketing. When asked backstage if he intended to make a point about Bottega being a house for grownups, he shot back, “It’s never about an age group. I dislike any kind of classification, by skin tone or age—it’s something I detest.” Rather, to be a Bottega customer, “you need to like something quiet” and to be “a little more cultivated about materials.”

Male model Jhanelle Castillo from New York Models & LA models fronts the new Daniel Patrick sportswear with a New Campaign coming on this days.

Daniel Patrick, the man behind the nomadic vision, was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. He moved to the U.S. in 2011, founded Daniel Patrick Inc. and launched the knomadik by Daniel Patrick line in early 2012 with his wife, Jenny. Based in Los Angeles, CA, Daniel achieved a childhood dream of his of becoming an American citizen in 2015.

Daniel’s interest in clothing started at the young age of four, when he was fascinated by clothes and became very picky about what he wore. He was also very intrigued by articles of clothing, a particular burgundy paisley tie he had as a child stands out in his mind.

Male model Jhanelle Castillo from New York Models & LA models fronts the new Daniel Patrick sportswear with a New Campaign coming on this days.

It wasn’t until 2006 that Daniel went into fashion and started on the path to starting his eponymous line after previously following in his father’s footsteps of going down the line to playing professional rugby league. Giving away an opportunity to play rugby professionally in the South of France, he enrolled in fashion school and began working various fashion jobs from retail to warehousing where he picked up different pieces of the fashion game. Channeling the hard work and discipline ingrained in him from his athletic days he was determined to start his own line.

A trip to Los Angeles and New York City in late 2009 was a catalyst for the beginning of his first collection and ultimately putting the wheels in motion for his line that he had previously felt stalled on.Male model Jhanelle Castillo from New York Models & LA models fronts the new Daniel Patrick sportswear with a New Campaign coming on this days.jhanelle-castillo-for-daniel-patrick-campaign4

The collections draw a number of inspirations that are true to who Daniel is and this identity becomes more and more poignant from collection to collection. Drawing inspiration from his favorite cities, Los Angeles and New York, his love of hip hop music and desert hikes, while also combining his athletic background with a minimal and militant appeal each collection unfolds. Daniel is continuously creating and tweaking and is known to drop new pieces more frequently than the regular fashion calendar dictates.jhanelle-castillo-for-daniel-patrick-campaign5

Designed and housed in our DTLA headquarters, with attention to detail, each piece in the collection is individually handmade from start to finish using materials sourced in Los Angeles, California. Male model Jhanelle Castillo from New York Models & LA models fronts the new Daniel Patrick sportswear with a New Campaign coming on this days.

The company’s move to the new headquarters in January 2016 and the opening of a second retail location on Melrose sets the tone for the expansion to come. with both the Daniel Patrick and knomadik lines being carried in over 50 high end boutiques around the world, the brand continues to grow in its product offerings on the path to becoming a true lifestyle brand; most recently having added women’s, kids and denim collections into the mix.Male model Jhanelle Castillo from New York Models & LA models fronts the new Daniel Patrick sportswear with a New Campaign coming on this days.

Well worth visiting: Kevin Slack shoots Christopher Côté in Quebec

Well worth visiting: Kevin Slack shoots Christopher Côté in Quebec.

Finally we get the new work of photographer Kevin Slack and Christopher Côté portrayed in Quebec. Kevin quoted –I have been wanting to work with Christopher for years. I had a photo shoot booked with Chris in the summer of 2015 and, when it fell through, it broke my heart a little. So, mid-summer 2016, I went to him, to Quebec, Quebec. It was my first time in Quebec, Quebec.  I am quite used to meeting models, but I was uncommonly giddy and nervous to meet with Chris for the first time.

I was staying in a back corner of Old Quebec – just far enough away from the more bustling Rue Saint-Jean – in quite a nice apartment-style hotel room and, just after my first coffee too early on a Sunday morning, I met him outside. Chris was dappled-drawn in the morning light under the trees of the park across the street. And while he is strong enough and handsome enough and swarthy enough to be intimidating, he was immediately affable and friendly and funny too. —Kevin Slack.

Helpful and humble and collaborative, Chris helped me ransack my hotel room to move around nearly everything that could be moved. And he helped me move it all back too.  And even after I had kept him much too long, he was still happy to go out and shoot in the outdoor light too.

So behind this beautiful and sexy smile, there’s a humble sexy young man captured only by lensman Kevin Slack.

Let’s get started to make this worth visiting.

The boys are back see  David Beckham and Kevin Hart to present the pieces from the H&M Modern Essentials collection for Autumn 2016.

Masculine, urban and sharp, the Modern Essentials collection selected by David Beckham creates a new, urban uniform for men for fall 2016 at H&M. When David Beckham selects the pieces for this collection, he takes the word “essentials” seriously, focusing on wearable classics that will remain relevant for years to come. The collection is all about individual masculine pieces that work together or stand on their own.

“My style is reflected in this collection — an edit of pieces I will wear for seasons to come.” —David Beckham

Standout pieces include the new flight jacket, a menswear classic updated in wool, and the nylon zip-up bomber – the must-have essential for men this season. A double-breasted knee-length coat adds the perfect touch of formality, and a semi-constructed two-button blazer can be worn as either a smart or informal piece. The precise color palette of gray, navy and wine red sets the urban mood, with the attention focused on the materials and textures.

“Outerwear is the foundation of the fall wardrobe. These styles are my personal favorites.” —David Beckham
